The only materials required for a commonplace book are a notebook and a pen. I have a couple of commonplace books that only use these two items and they are precious to me.

I also keep commonplace books that use a lot of color, artwork, and ephemera. These items are not required, but can be fun to add an extra layer of personalization to your books.

There are likely some people in the world with a preferred scissor brand or type, but I am not one of them. I generally buy whatever brand is available in a three-pack at a big box store.
