“one big idea” layout

This page template works well when you:

  • want a specific idea to stand out or stand alone

  • have a lengthy amount of text

  • want the words to stand out as much as (or more than) the design elements

The “big idea” of the “one big idea” layout is to fill an entire page with a single piece of text. This layout style is simple, but bold and I’ve found myself using it more and more often as time passes.

To make your layout visually appealing, it might be helpful to look at your facing page and attempt to “balance” it.

For example, if the facing page is very text-heavy or otherwise filled from edge to edge, your “one big idea” page might look best with wide margins. (I use a pencil and ruler to draw boundary lines and write within that space. I then go back and erase the pencil lines once the text is complete.)

Conversely, if the facing page already has a lot of white space, you could balance that with a full page of art and/or text.

Running-text center-focused pages are a type of “one big idea” page.
